URBIO 2025 online webinar: "Urban Biodiversity and Design in the Time of Artificial Intelligence (AI): Pros and Contras"
📅 Date: April 10, 2025
🕒 Time: 13:30 CET–17:00 CET
📍 Format: Online (Zoom link will be provided upon registration)
This webinar will explore the intersection of artificial intelligence and urban biodiversity, focusing on the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges of AI-driven approaches in planning and designing urban nature. Our discussion will revolve around the role of AI in monitoring and enhancing urban ecosystems, data-driven decision-making for sustainable city planning, and the implementation of blue-green infrastructure projects. Additionally, the webinar will address ethical concerns, potential risks, and policy implications of AI in urban biodiversity management and design. Through case studies and best practices shared by participants, we aim to gain insights into the future of AI-supported research and implementation projects, advancing sustainability transformation with a focus on design for both biodiversity and people. Topics to discuss include:
1️⃣ Intersection of AI and Urban Biodiversity (e.g., the role of AI in monitoring and enhancing urban biodiversity, data-driven decision-making for sustainable city planning).
2️⃣ AI-Powered Design for Biodiversity (e.g., smart technologies for landscape architecture projects, blue-green infrastructure, and nature-based solutions; AI in optimizing urban green spaces and habitat restoration).
3️⃣ Challenges and Ethical Considerations (e.g., risks of AI-driven urban planning and design for biodiversity support, ethical concerns regarding AI decision-making in designing outdoor spaces for both humans and non-humans).
4️⃣ Case Studies and Best Practices (e.g., real-world examples of AI-supported biodiversity and design projects, lessons learned from AI implementation in the field).
5️⃣ Future Perspectives and Policy Implications.

IFLA International Webinar Conference on Landscape Architecture Education and Studio Pedagogy.
A Zoom Webinar organized by the IFLA Education and Academic Affairs Committee, Student Competition Working Group Chair.
Monday, November 18th, 2024. - Starting time: 9:30 a.m. (GMT)
The symposium aims to explore landscape architecture education and pedagogy today, show regional differences, and highlight the need for international dialogue to benefit the discipline. As landscape architecture programs face contemporary socio-environmental challenges regionally, they are evolving away from outdated modern standards. Furthermore, the rise of digital tools, such as GIS, AI, 3D modeling and rendering tools appropriate for landscape equip education and research with possibilities never seen before. Fostering international conversations is essential in the context of such developments. By sharing diverse perspectives and best practices, we can enrich landscape architecture education, encourage innovation and collaboration across borders, and advocate for a proper approach to landscape architecture. Indeed, regional differences play a crucial role, and they deserve not only to be nurtured but also confronted with the "others" to strengthen themselves without hindering the possibility of international mobility.

4th Symposium of the Istituto di studi urbani e del paesaggio (ISUP)
organised by
Jonathan Sergison
João Nunes
João Gomes da Silva
with the support of
Mosè Cometta
and Enrico Sassi
Landscape architecture is a powerful tool for addressing issues that have generally been neglected in architectural research and practice until recently.
Innovative methodological approaches inherent to the multidisciplinary character of landscape architecture involve the consideration of time as a fundamental dimension in its conceptual framing, and a focus on exploring new ways of merging anthropic and natural systems rather than on the creation of new objects.
These characteristics may allow the transformative processes that are part of the continuous construction of human habitats to develop more ethical ways of engaging with and working towards the resolution of global issues.
In both practice and research, landscape architecture has produced new ideas
and activated processes that address contemporary challenges in innovative ways, with some exemplary results.
We call on all those who, as researchers and as professionals in practice, can communicate such experiences.
Moving away from the classical format of presenting practices’ work, individual projects or portfolios we invite contributions from designers, planners and researchers reflecting on how landscape architecture addresses the major challenges of our society and contributes to the production of contemporary space.
The symposium aims to explore the following issues
The approach of landscape architecture to climate change
Energy transition and energy landscapes
Water quality, availability and distribution
Social inequalities in access to water, food, space, and knowledge
Relation between the anthropic and the wild
Soil erosion and agricultural land abandonment. World hunger and productive capacity.
Mobility at all scales
Waste management and environmental contamination
Territorial continuity

In the previous IFLA APR Talk and Share, the status of landscape architecture in Hong Kong and Australia was explored. Landscape Architect Chris Tidswell outlined the professional status in Australia and its regulation by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA). Landscape Architect Paul Chan, President of the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects, discussed the current challenges and state of the profession in Hong Kong. Despite facing limited recognition from other sectors and advocacy efforts, both regions are working to boost the visibility and impact of landscape architects.
Continuing the session on the status of the landscape architecture profession in the IFLA Asia Pacific Region, now the focus shifts to Malaysia, New Zealand and the Phillipines. The IFLA Asia Pacific Region, a subset of the International Federation of Landscape Architects with 14 member associations, aims to advance education and professional development in landscape architecture. The upcoming event will explore how the profession is recognized across the region, address challenges, and highlight recent advancements, providing insights to enhance the field further.
This session aims to:
Provide insights on the status of Landscape Architecture in the respective countries within the Asia Pacific Region.
Discuss the current issues and challenges faced in the recognition of the Landscape Architecture profession with regard to their legal recognition.
Recognize the significant advancements that the profession has achieved, highlighting the progress made in establishing standards and gaining recognition.

Regenerative Landscapes. Designing the Transition.
The 60th World Congress of the International Federation of Landscape Architecture (IFLA), hosted by the UCTEA Chamber of Turkish Landscape Architects, will be held in Istanbul between 4-6 September 2024 with the theme "Code Red for Earth".
The IFLA World Congress is the most important annual event for the Landscape Architecture profession and the IFLA community. The World Congress offers professional development and networking opportunities for practitioners, entrepreneurs, faculty, researchers, students, journalists, as well as anyone interested in the impact of landscape architecture on our society, economy, and culture. It is also an international event where challenges in education as well as current trends and issues in professional practice are discussed and answers to all problems are sought.
Earth is experiencing an unprecedented rate of change. We are all living with ‘Code Red’. The scaleless and boundless nature of environmental crises creates an irreversible degradation in terrestrial, atmospheric, and aquatic environments that harm all living and their habitats. A considerable amount of the world’s population is affected daily by climate change and severe disasters, facing livelihood destruction, land-use change, habitat encroachment, extinction of species, and wildlife crime posing a significant threat to the future of the Earth and all living.
Herein, the 2024 IFLA 60th World Congress calls for humankind to take urgent action to prevent the worst impacts of environmental crises. Acknowledging human responsibility, the congress invites policymakers, professionals, scientists, and individuals on stage to establish discourse and course for the Earth’s future.
Addressing landscape architecture as a professional and academic practice that is deeply and firmly rooted in built environments’ relationship to nature, we intend to foreground the mediatory/mediating and catalytic role of Landscape Architecture and invite our esteemed scholars, researchers, educators, and practitioners to join this pivotal world conference.
The three-day congress intends to discuss anthropogenic impacts on the Earth system and establish scenarios by forming an action-oriented interaction ground rather than only (re)pointing out the problems.
