Landscape architecture is a powerful tool for addressing issues that have generally been neglected in architectural research and practice until recently.
Innovative methodological approaches inherent to the multidisciplinary character of landscape architecture involve the consideration of time as a fundamental dimension in its conceptual framing, and a focus on exploring new ways of merging anthropic and natural systems rather than on the creation of new objects.
These characteristics may allow the transformative processes that are part of the continuous construction of human habitats to develop more ethical ways of engaging with and working towards the resolution of global issues.
In both practice and research, landscape architecture has produced new ideas
and activated processes that address contemporary challenges in innovative ways, with some exemplary results.
We call on all those who, as researchers and as professionals in practice, can communicate such experiences.
Moving away from the classical format of presenting practices’ work, individual projects or portfolios we invite contributions from designers, planners and researchers reflecting on how landscape architecture addresses the major challenges of our society and contributes to the production of contemporary space.
The symposium aims to explore the following issues
The approach of landscape architecture to climate change
Energy transition and energy landscapes
Water quality, availability and distribution
Social inequalities in access to water, food, space, and knowledge
Relation between the anthropic and the wild
Soil erosion and agricultural land abandonment. World hunger and productive capacity.
Mobility at all scales
Waste management and environmental contamination
Territorial continuity

Following the success of the first two series, the International Association of Horticultural Producers (AIPH) and the Worshipful Company of Gardeners (WCoG) present the AIPH Green City Briefings 2024/25. These free one hour webinars will demonstrate how successful integrated urban greening provides benefits for the city, its residents, and nature.
Each webinar will provide compelling evidence and examples of the power of ‘living green’ to deliver multiple solutions to city challenges. The first webinar in the series, titled ‘Flourishing urban design with plants’, will take place at 1pm BST on 16th May 2024. The focus of this session will be on how the incorporation of plants into city environments not only provides beauty, but also contributes to improved air quality, reduced urban heat island effect, and enhanced biodiversity.
Leading this first session is Jane Welsh, OALA, FCSLA, who is the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Special Envoy to AIPH and Co-Chair of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Committee on Climate Adaptation. Jane is currently the Project Manager of the Environmental Planning unit of Toronto City Planning, leading the team responsible for creating new innovative solutions to address climate adaptation and mitigation, natural heritage protection and biodiversity loss and change the way Canada’s largest city is built.
Two experts will join Jane and will present real life examples of how selecting plants for cities can combat significant issues. The first speaker is Elisa Olivares, Lecturer for the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield. Elisa’s presentation will focus on how research, outreach, and collaboration can help cities in Mexico to improve their biodiversity, where the landscape is experiencing accelerated loss due to climate change, land use, and vegetation loss.
The second speaker for the Briefing is Kathryn Deery, Head Horticulturist at Lurie Garden in Chicago, USA. An urban model of responsible horticulture, Lurie Garden provides a healthy habitat for a wide variety of plants, animals, and insects. The garden offers a four-season experience, blending Chicago’s past, present and future with bold design, dramatic form, and intimate spaces. In her presentation, Kathryn will explore shifting the mindset from one of maintenance to management in the garden and designing with perennials in an urban setting.
Following these presentations, Jane Welsh will lead a panel style discussion, taking questions from the audience, and from those posted on the AIPH Global Green City Forum.

FAO, Arbor Day Foundation, the City of Washington, the United States Forest Service (USFS), the Smithsonian Institution, the Politecnico di Milano, the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF) and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) are pleased to announce the 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests.
The main theme of this 2nd edition on the Forum, Greener, Healthier and Happier Cities for All, was chosen to underline the importance of building inclusive cities where the goods and services of urban forests and trees are equitably and equally available to all urban dwellers.
More specifically, the objectives of the 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests are to:
● take stock on progress made in the implementation of the Call for Action and Tree Cities of the World Programme, launched at the 1st WFUF in Mantova in 2018, and identify follow-up measures and actions;
● support the implementation of the Agenda 2030, in particular SDG11, and the New Urban Agenda, and optimize actions related to urban ecosystems and green spaces;
● provide a venue where urban forests and green infrastructure actors and stakeholders can showcase successful initiatives to maximise the contribution of urban forests to health and wellbeing of urban dwellers;
● bring a wider spectrum of actors on board, especially from sectors that are not traditionally involved, by demonstrating the importance of urban forests and trees to the generation of social and economic benefits;
● create links between ecosystem restoration opportunities and initiatives with businesses interested in building a solid portfolio of sustainable production and impact investment in and around urban areas.
We look forward to seeing you all in Washington DC! Additional details on the venue and programme will follow soonest
