On May 28, 1976, the Brazilian Association of Landscape Architects (ABAP) was created in response to the request from the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) meeting held the previous year in San Antonio, Texas (USA). Landscape architect Rosa Grena Kliass, then an individual member of IFLA, brought together a group of professionals working in São Paulo and together decided to found an association representing Brazil in the international institution. Two years later, in 1978, the young ABAP dared to host the XVI IFLA Congress in Salvador, Bahia, bringing together professionals from all over Brazil and from different countries.

According to its statutory provisions, its main goals are to assist, promote, support, encourage and develop scientific, technological, educational, cultural, social and environmental actions aimed at the development, dissemination and professional enhancement of landscape architecture in the country.

In 2006, after completing 30 years of struggle, the organization held its 1st International Landscape Architecture Congress, gathering 300 professionals for three consecutive days at the Gustavo Capanema Palace in Rio de Janeiro. At the opening of its 40th anniversary year, it has already held three editions of that event, with the fourth scheduled, and started a series of national seminars. Currently, besides its headquarters in São Paulo, it has several state centers.
