IFLA kicks off celebrations for 75th Anniversary
The International Federation of Landscape Architects - IFLA - was founded in Cambridge, England with Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe as its first President in 1948. It represented 15 states from Europe and North America. Today IFLA represents 78 national associations from Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
IFLA is now in its 75th year and we would like to celebrate this anniversary worldwide. It is time to look back, discuss the current issues and challenges in landscape architecture, and dare look into the future.
The official kick-off took place on 14th March 2023 as an online event to allow as many people as possible to join. Dr Bruno Marques, IFLA President, welcomed participants to the 75th-anniversary programme, which will happen across all IFLA regions. He also thanked the working group who has worked relentlessly in getting together such an amazing line-up of events.
The diverse and numerous events and initiatives in the anniversary year are organised and implemented with the participation of all IFLA regions. Three webinars dedicated to the anniversary will highlight the history of IFLA, the present by focusing on education in landscape architecture and the profession’s future. These will be complemented by numerous online and face-to-face events in the regions, dealing with the regional context and challenges.
Based on the Green Book for IFLA’s 50th anniversary, there will be a new edition of the publication for this year’s anniversary. The development process is in full swing, and we are still looking for volunteers who would like to contribute with their knowledge and skills to a successful result. If some particular stories, moments or photographs should be included in this publication, please contact the IFLA Secretariat.
As a special initiative, IFLA is officially launching an artistic competition. Participants are invited to depict their vision of landscape architecture for the next 25 years using a wide range of media, such as photographs, drawings, paintings or other artistic means. The results will be published during the 59th IFLA World Congress in Stockholm (Sweden) and Nairobi (Kenya), 28-30 September 2023.
We want everyone to be part of the celebrations, spread the word and get involved. Therefore, IFLA will participate in various events and conferences associated with landscape architecture and related built environment disciplines to foster the exchange of experiences and knowledge with colleagues and expand and consolidate networks.
In addition, important personalities who have shaped, accompanied, and advanced IFLA in its 75 years will also be appropriately acknowledged. Among others, past IFLA presidents will have their say in the anniversary year and the Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award past winners.
This year, IFLA aims not only to further promote the profession and highlight its importance to society’s current challenges, but we aim to inspire, drive change, and celebrate landscape architecture in all its facets.
