The INSTITUTE FOR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH AFRICA (ILASA), whose mission is to advance and promote the landscape architectural profession in Southern Africa, is trying to raise funds to enable them to publish an illustrated book on iconic South African landscape architect Ann Sutton (1924–2011), a pioneer in her chosen profession.

Called "Ann Sutton, Her Life & Work" (draft title), the book will cover all of Ann Sutton’s backstory, including her early life, the challenges she faced as a deaf person, the training she received, her output, her love of horses, and her friends, peers and clients. Critically, it will assess the contributions she made to her profession in South Africa, pitching her as a female leader in a once male-dominated profession. She innovated contextual landscape architecture and planning, prioritising indigenous plant species and locally sourced construction materials long before these became ‘standard’ sustainable practice. Water-wise, indigenous and sustainable are ideas Ann was applying intuitively from the beginning. Ann Sutton’s work needs to be recorded before it’s too late. The book’s content is made up of about 12 projects drawn from around the country. Also see the attached brief.

The goal is to raise $30,000 (R500 000) to enable an initial printing of 1000 books, which can then be made available for purchase by the public and landscape design fraternity. The book is scheduled to be launched in the first week of February 2021. The month of August is therefore dedicated to raise the funds to realise this book.
